Why Optimists Quit & The Mindset for Success
Feeling Tired? You Might Be More Likely to Curse and Make Self-Deprecating Jokes
We all know that a good night's sleep is crucial for our overall well-being, but did you know that poor sleep quality can also influence the way we communicate? A recent study published in Current Psychology has found a fascinating link between sleep deprivation and the use of arousing language, specifically curse words and self-defeating humor.
When we're tired, our brains may seek ways to counteract the feelings of fatigue, and one way it does this is by using language that stimulates us. Curse words and self-deprecating jokes can actually serve as a physiological mechanism to boost our arousal levels and help us feel more alert.
So, if you find yourself using colorful language or making more jokes at your own expense after a restless night, you're not alone.
In my opinion, this doesn’t excuse the use of harsh language, but you need to be aware that when you are sleep deprived your self control can be inhibited. A recent review by Feigl and colleagues states:
“A sleep-deprived individual who has expended the necessary resources for self-control is at an increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, poor attentional capacity, and compromised decision making.”
The next time you catch yourself using more colorful language, engaging in self-defeating humor, or responding in a way that’s not aligned with your values, you may want to take a moment to reflect on your sleep habits.
1) Are you consistently getting more than 7 hours of sleep?
2) Are you going to bed and waking up at the same time every day?
3) Are you in bed before midnight?
By taking charge of your sleep habits, you empower yourself to show up as your best self in all aspects of life, from your personal interactions to your professional endeavors.
So, the next time you find yourself burning the midnight oil, remember that the benefits of a good night's sleep extend far beyond just feeling refreshed – they can shape the very words you use and the way you connect with others.
