🧠 Tiger Woods, Navy SEALs & Mental Toughness
Have you ever tried to do something difficult, and other people either looked down on you for even giving it a shot or tried to poke holes in your dreams?
Have you ever tried to do something difficult, and other people either looked down on you for even giving it a shot or tried to poke holes in your dreams?
I know, I've been there.
But, you know who’s also been there? Tiger Woods.
I grew up in the Tiger era. I was a teenager when Tiger hit the scene, and Tiger seemed like an unstoppable force.
He entered the PGA Tour as a 2x US Amateur Champion and made the cut at both the Masters and British Open. But when he showed up at the Milwaukee Open in 1996 for his first-ever tournament as a pro, not everyone was impressed with his...
Well, watch this video, and then we'll pick up the conversation.
Now, if you aren't a golf fanatic, you may be asking yourself, "Who is Curtis Strange?" Curtis Strange is an accomplished PGA Tour player with 17 Tour wins, and he's a two-time U.S. Open Champion. He won back-to-back in 1988 and 1989.
But this is 1996, and this 21-year-old Tiger Woods is speaking confidently about how he's there to win, and it didn't rub Curtis the right way.
Was Tiger being overly arrogant? I don't think so. He just stated the facts as he saw them.
His goals were:
Play 4 solid rounds
Winning
That's reasonable. But, oh, the "older guys." I forget, Tiger should have adjusted his expectations and said, "I'm just happy to be here."
Is that what we want to hear out of our Olympic hopefuls or our kids when they go do something hard?
Heck no. Tiger stated a process goal and an outcome goal.
Now, how did the Milwaukee Open turn out for him? He shot -7, including his first-ever hole-in-one as a pro, and tied for 60th. Oh, and he earned $2,544. He finished the year with 4 Tour wins and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors.
And Curtis?
Zero wins.
Here's the deal. Tiger knew what he wanted, and he went out and worked for it, and wasn't backing down, no matter what the old guard thought.
Are you about to engage in something difficult? Are people skeptical? GOOD. Put in the work, and go do your thing.
